About Edward Elric: 

   Edward Elric was born in a country town called Resembool in Amestris . He lived with his younger brother, Alphonse, and both of his parents, Trisha Elric and Van Hohenheim, until Hohenheim embarked on a journey when Edward was still a small child.

   Shortly after Hohenheim left, Trisha fell ill and died, leaving the two young boys as orphans. Their neighbor, Pinako Rockbell, then began looking after them.

   During this time, they studied alchemy in the hopes of being able to bring their mother back to life. After meeting a skilled alchemist named Izumi Curtis, Edward and his brother become her apprentices.

   When they return home from their training, they tried Human Transmutation in their father's study. The brothers not only failed to bring their mother back to life, but it also costs Edward his left leg and Alphonse his entire body. Edward then performs a second transmutation, sacrificing his own right arm to bind Alphonse's soul to a nearby suit of armor.
  
   Edward becomes a State Alchemist in order to find a way to recover their bodies through use of the legendary Philosopher's Stone. Winry Rockbell, his childhood friend, also outfits him with prosthetic automail limbs to replace those that he lost. Because of this, Edward is nicknamed the "Fullmetal Alchemist", given by Roy Mustang.
